Why Is My AirTag Not Updating Location? What “Last Seen” Means

If your AirTag location is not updating, it usually does not mean the AirTag is frozen at the location shown on the map. It means Apple's Find My network has not provided you with a newer location detection yet.

In Find My, the timestamp beneath an AirTag tells you when that location was detected. If it says “Last Seen” 10 minutes, an hour, or several hours ago, treat the map point as the AirTag's last known location—not necessarily where it is right now.

This distinction becomes especially important if you are using an AirTag as an additional location clue while looking for a missing cat. AirTag uses Bluetooth and Apple's Find My network rather than continuous live GPS, so location updates can be irregular.

What does “Last Seen” mean on an AirTag?

“Last Seen” tells you when Find My last received location information for the AirTag.

For example, imagine Find My shows:

That does not necessarily mean the AirTag has remained at 123 Example Street for 37 minutes.

It means that location is the most recent one currently available to you. The AirTag could still be there, or it may have moved since that detection.

How does an AirTag update its location?

AirTag does not contain a cellular connection that continuously sends its own GPS position to your phone.

Instead, an AirTag broadcasts a secure Bluetooth signal. Nearby devices participating in Apple's Find My network can detect that signal and securely report the AirTag's approximate location back through the network.

When Find My receives a newer detection, the location and timestamp can update.

This is why AirTag location updates do not follow a guaranteed schedule such as every 10 seconds, every minute, or every five minutes.

Does an AirTag update its location in real time?

No. AirTag should not be treated as a continuous real-time GPS tracker.

1. There has not been a newer Find My network detection

This is the most important concept to understand.

If the AirTag has not recently been detected through the Find My network, your app does not have a newer location to display.

The previous map location can therefore remain visible even if the AirTag has moved.

2. The AirTag is in an area with fewer nearby devices

AirTag's remote finding capability depends on the Find My network.

An AirTag moving through a populated neighborhood may encounter Find My network devices differently from one moving through a remote field, wooded area, or other low-traffic environment.

That does not mean a particular city location is guaranteed to update quickly or a rural location can never update. It simply means network detections are not guaranteed everywhere or at regular intervals.

3. The AirTag has moved since the last detection

This is particularly important when the AirTag is attached to something mobile.

Suppose a Find My detection occurred outside a house at 2:10 PM. If the AirTag then moved several blocks without another detection being reported to you, Find My may continue showing the 2:10 PM location.

Always use the timestamp to judge how much confidence to place in the map point.

4. You are outside nearby-finding range

Remote Find My network detection and nearby finding are related but different parts of the AirTag experience.

When a compatible iPhone is close enough to the AirTag, Find My may offer nearby-finding features. When the AirTag is farther away, you may instead be working from its map location and directions.

Not seeing a nearby-finding option does not automatically mean the AirTag has stopped working. It may simply be outside the range required for that nearby connection.

5. The AirTag battery may need attention

AirTag relies on its battery to operate.

If Find My reports that the AirTag battery is low, replace it rather than waiting until you need the tracker during an urgent search.

Battery checks should be part of normal tracker maintenance, especially if an AirTag is carried on something you rely on regularly.

6. Your phone or Find My app may have a temporary connection problem

The AirTag itself does not need to be beside your own iPhone for the Find My network to help report a remote location.

However, your device still needs to be able to access Find My information.

If the information appears unexpectedly stale, you can check:

• Your iPhone's internet connection
• Whether Find My opens normally
• Whether the AirTag still appears under Items
• Whether other Find My information is loading as expected

Avoid repeatedly removing and resetting an AirTag during an active search unless you have a specific reason to believe the AirTag itself was configured incorrectly.

7. You are expecting GPS-style tracking behavior

A location that updates at irregular intervals can look like a malfunction if you expect a moving dot that follows the AirTag continuously.

But that is not how AirTag is designed to work.

Apple designed AirTag to help keep track of personal items through the Find My network. It is not a dedicated pet GPS tracker.

If continuous or frequent active location monitoring is an important requirement, compare dedicated GPS tracking options rather than expecting AirTag to behave like one.

AirTag says “Last Seen Now” — does that mean the location is live?

A very recent timestamp is useful because it tells you Find My has recent location information.

However, do not interpret “now” as a promise of continuous second-by-second tracking.

If the AirTag is moving, its position can change after the most recent detection.

When searching for a moving cat, use a fresh AirTag location to narrow the search area and then look physically around that location.

Once you reach the location, physically search nearby hiding places such as underneath vehicles, decks, stairs, bushes, sheds, porches and other structures.

Should you go to the AirTag's last known location?

If you are searching for something important and the location is reasonably recent, the last known location can be a useful place to investigate.

But interpret it according to age.

Will walking closer make the AirTag update?

Getting physically closer can become useful if you enter nearby Bluetooth range and Find My offers nearby-finding or sound features.

But simply walking toward an old map point does not guarantee that the remote network location will immediately refresh.

If you reach the area, use both Find My and a physical search rather than repeatedly refreshing the app.

Does the 2026 AirTag solve delayed location updates?

Apple's current-generation AirTag improves nearby findability compared with the previous generation, including greater Precision Finding range and a louder speaker.

Those changes can make locating an AirTag easier once you are in the appropriate nearby conditions.

They do not change AirTag into a continuously connected GPS tracker.

Remote location information still depends on the Find My network rather than a cellular GPS connection built into the AirTag.
